Curtis Axel BioEdit
Despite a WWE Hall of Fame lineage, successful stints in WWE NXT and The New Nexus, and a WWE Tag Team Title reign alongside David Otunga, the Superstar formerly known as Michael McGillicutty wanted to make a name for himself. He realized his wish in May 2013, when Paul Heyman remolded the third-generation Superstar, and replaced his WWE-given name with a moniker that pays homage to his father, "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, and his grandfather, Larry "The Axe" Hennig. At that moment, McGillicutty was officially reborn as Curtis Axel.
Axel's debut as a “Paul Heyman guy” shocked the WWE Universe, especially after he scored his first-ever victory over Triple H who, still feeling the effects of his Extreme Rules battle with Brock Lesnar one night earlier, was unable to continue the match. Axel followed up his big upset with a surprising countout win over John Cena, then a No-Disqualification Match victory over the Cenation leader one week later after Ryback decimated the then-WWE Champion.
